Thank you for visiting my page and welcome. My name is Thomas and this will by my first year participating in VIDEA's Global Solidarity Challenge. After witnessing the great effort put in by my better half and all the other VIDEA volunteers over the last 2 years, I have decided to also join in to support this cause.
As a community-based Occupational Therapist, I rely on technology and electricity for multiple hours each day, tapping away on my computer and talking over the phone, not to mention operating a vehicle alone. I definitely acknowlege the ease the power grid allows me to engage in my work, while also being cognizant of the impact this causes on the environment. As a person that would rather not be on a computer or in a car and rather hiking in the woods, I further recognize the destabilizing impact electricity demands on environmental resources, especially here in BC.
As energy consumption is something I already strive to keep low, I understand that there are certain privileges I take. Therefore, my challenge to myself will be to remove as many frivolous uses of electricity I can think of. I will share the challenge with the team leader of not using any lights. I will also not use the dishwasher, washing machine or electric kettle. I also commit to strict cold showers. Moreover, I will also commit to writing a letter to my MP to address conversation on energy and resource extraction abroad. I also encourage you, if you have taken the time to read this far down, to also write a similar letter.
