Please help us reach our collective goal of: $4,000

$3,125 raised so far,   $875 to go!

Welcome to the E-Waste Watchers GSC page - glad you could stop by!!

It’s no secret that there are some major concerns around our dependence on our gadgets! Unfortunately, it’s a bigger problem than too much screen time or the challenge of making it through dinner without checking our phones!

Technology has brought so many advantages - we can stay connected regardless of distance, we can access overwhelming amounts of information with a click of a button and we can learn hundreds of new skills with just a simple video tutorial - the possibilities are endless!

But people, we have a problem!

-41.8 million metric tonnes of e-waste were generated around the globe in 2014 and 725 metric tonnes of that were generated by Canadians!?!

-and in Canada, the recycling and disposal of our electronics is managed by the province (who often pass this off to private companies…)

-but the problem is NOT just at the level of disposing our used and broken electronics. Most of the ‘waste’ is generated during the manufacturing process!

and it goes even further than environmental degradation

-at least 40,000 children are involved in mining cobalt (the material used to produce lithium-ion batteries) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo - making less than $2/day

This year, we are going to use this week of solidarity to take a look at who makes our electronics and educate ourselves on how we can do better and be more environmentally and socially conscious global citizens. We are the E-Waste Watchers!

Here are a few challenge ideas but go crazy and come up with your own if you like!

  • Auction off old electronics/donate them.
  • Photo challenge: collect all of the electronics in your house and photograph them. Post the photos online and make a digital map of where your electronics came from.
  • Don’t read or write for a week to stand in solidarity with children who are forced to work instead of going to school.
  • Get X # of people to commit to not replace their phones/electronics until broken (instead of upgrades) or buy used.
  • Go to/use a ‘fix it’ café. Try to fix broken appliances in your home.
